June’s Food4Thought – People buy people – how talent is central to a thriving growing business

People and talent are lynch-pins of any successful business and at June’s dinners, we got to grips with how to find, keep and reward talent. Recruiting the right talent means you can really maximise business growth; conversely, the wrong people in your business can suck your time and energy, holding your business back and costing you money. Our ambitious business owners and directors were full of ideas about how to recruit the best people. Discussions ranged over where to advertise, whether or not to use agencies and how to screen candidates. Interview technique There were plenty of suggestions about techniques for interviewing, from traditional competency-based interviews and skills exercises to more informal chats and the pub test. One diner said her first test on meeting a candidate was whether she would take them to a family barbeque as this was an indication of how they would fit within the business and, crucially, whether they shared the same values. May’s Food4Thought Huddle

An inspiring evening of socialising and sharing Last month more than 30 ambitious business owners from Leeds, Sheffield and Newcastle got to know one another over drinks and canapés at The Alchemist on Greek Street in Leeds. The Food4Thought Huddle is a twice-yearly event which brings together members of all of the peer mentoring groups so they can build collaborative relationships, discuss their experiences and get to know one another’s businesses in an informal setting.
